[Week 8] John Harbaugh: Ravens made an "honest mistake" in Lamar Jackson practice designation

The Ravens got a much-needed win on Sunday. It capped a crazy 24 hours or so in which the Ravens found themselves embroiled in a controversy regarding the mischaracterization of quarterback Lamar Jackson ’s practice participation on Friday. The Ravens said he fully participated. They should have said he was limited, because he did not take reps with the first-string offense. Coach John Harbaugh was asked about the situation after Sunday’s game. “I’m not involved in those rules,” Harbaugh told reporters. “I don’t know those particular rules. That was probably — I think in their defense, you know, he practiced a full practice. I think they felt like, because he did the same number of reps, it was a full practice. But when you dig in and you read the rule, at the end of the day it wasn’t right. So that’s what it was. That’s why as soon as we found out, we changed it.” Harbaugh then was asked the obvious follow-up: Who’s “they”? “Yeah, that’s in the training room and the P....

[Week 8] Lamar Jackson injury-report snafu could result in fines, loss of draft picks, even suspensions

In 1947, the NFL launched the injury report as a way to fight illegal gambling . This week, the NBA’s fresh gambling scandal arising from manipulated legal prop bets makes the NFL’s injury report more important than ever. And, of course, a major problem arose on the day after the prop hit the fan for pro basketball. To summarize, Ravens quarterback Lamar Jackson practiced on Friday, despite his lingering hamstring injury. He took a full slate of reps with the scout team. He did not take any reps with the first-team offense. The Ravens listed him as fully participating in practice. Under the language of the NFL’s “Personnel (Injury) Report Policy,” it’s clear that the Ravens applied the incorrect label to Jackson for Friday’s practice. He should have been listed as “limited.” The NFL is reviewing the situation. And the policy, a copy of which PFT has obtained, contains specific information about the potential penalties the Ravens may face. The Commissioner, under the policy, “may depr...

[Week 8] Under the rules, Lamar Jackson should have been listed as "limited"

The Ravens corrected their Friday injury report on Saturday. Despite the clarification, the Ravens may still end up with a problem. The NFL says it will be reviewing the situation. The Ravens originally listed quarterback Lamar Jackson as fully participating in practice on Friday. On Saturday, when Jackson was ruled out, the Ravens changed the Friday designation from “full” to “limited.” “ Lamar Jackson was present for and participated fully in our entire practice ahead of Sunday’s game against the Bears,” the Ravens said in a statement. “Upon further evaluation and after conferring with the league office, because Lamar didn’t take starter reps in practice , we updated our report to reflect his practice participation.” Further review shouldn’t have been needed. Based on the league’s “Personnel (Injury) Report Policy,” the term “full participation” should be used only when a player has taken “100 percent” of his “normal repetitions.” From the policy, a copy of which th...

[Week 8] Ravens rule out Lamar Jackson, admit he was not a full participant in Friday's practice

The Ravens have announced that Lamar Jackson will not play on Sunday against the Bears. Tyler Huntley is expected to start at quarterback on Sunday, making his first start of the season after Cooper Rush started the last two games in Jackson’s absence. In addition to announcing that Jackson is out, the Ravens also changed Jackson’s Friday practice status. Yesterday, the Ravens said that Jackson was a full participant in practice . Today the Ravens said that Jackson had actually been a limited participant in practice. Retroactively changing a player’s practice status is highly unusual, and could land the Ravens in hot water. The NFL requires teams to release accurate information about a player’s practice status because the NFL does not want insiders passing along information to gamblers. If there was ever a week when NFL teams needed to be transparent about that, it was this week, when the FBI arrested an NBA player and an NBA coach amid accusations that they were providing information...

[Week 8] Lamar Jackson officially listed as questionable for Sunday

John Harbaugh didn’t say if Lamar Jackson will start at quarterback against the Bears on Sunday when he spoke to reporters at a Friday press conference and the team’s final injury report didn’t make anything definitive either. Jackson has been listed as questionable after a full practice on Friday. It was the first full practice for Jackson since he injured his hamstring against the Chiefs on September 28. No other Ravens players have injury designations coming off of a bye week that has done good things for the health of the 1-5 team. Cooper Rush started both games that Jackson missed with his injury, but Harbaugh said the team will go with Tyler Huntley against the Bears if Jackson is not back in the lineup. While that seems unlikely given his trajectory over the course of the week and the importance of the game, final word won’t come until the weekend.

Ravens officially rule out Lamar Jackson for Week 6

Lamar officially will miss a second consecutive game with his hamstring injury. The Ravens ruled him out on Friday. The Ravens are 4-11 without Jackson since he became their starting quarterback. Cooper Rush, whom the team signed in the offseason, will make his second start for the Ravens. The Ravens have their off week next week, so Jackson could be in line to return in Week 8 against the Bears. The Ravens also ruled out linebacker Roquan Smith (hamstring), fullback Pat Ricard (calf), offensive tackle Emery Jones (shoulder), cornerback Chidobe Awuzie (hamstring) and wide receiver Devontez Walker (oblique). Wide receiver Zay Flowers (shoulder) is questionable.

[Week 5] Lamar ruled out vs. Texans due to hamstring injury

Lamar Jackson has been ruled out for Sunday's game against the Houston Texans due to a hamstring injury, the team announced Friday. Jackson suffered the injury in last week's loss to the Kansas City Chiefs, exiting in the third quarter and not returning. Jackson hasn't practiced this week. Sunday's game will be the first contest the two-time MVP has missed due to injury since a sprained PCL sidelined him for the final six matchups of the 2022 campaign. Jackson's recovery timeline remains unclear. The Ravens face the Los Angeles Rams in Week 6 and then have a bye in Week 7. Cooper Rush, who replaced the injured Jackson in Week 4, is slated to get the start, according to ESPN's Jamison Hensley. Rush has gone 9-5 in 14 starts during his eight-year NFL career, all with the Dallas Cowboys. The 31-year-old threw for 1,844 yards with 12 touchdowns and five interceptions in 2024. Rush started eight games last season after Dak Prescott suffered a season-ending injury in ...

[Week 4] Lamar Jackson leaves game vs. Chiefs early with hamstring injury

Lamar Jackson left Sunday's blowout 37-20 loss to the Kansas City Chiefs late in the third quarter due to a hamstring injury. Jackson did not take the field for the start of the Ravens' drive just before the end of the quarter at Arrowhead Stadium, though it wasn't immediately clear what had happened. Instead, backup Cooper Rush went out in his place. continue reading...

[Week 4] Lamar Jackson could miss 2-3 weeks with hamstring injury

Ravens quarterback Lamar Jackson ’s hamstring injury could keep him off the field for multiple games. Jackson is likely to miss Sunday’s game against the Texans and could miss two or three weeks , according to the Baltimore Sun . Cooper Rush stepped in for Jackson to finish Sunday’s game against the Chiefs, and Rush will start on Sunday if Jackson can’t go. Rush and Jackson are the only quarterbacks on the Ravens’ active roster, but longtime backup Tyler Huntley is on the practice squad and will likely be added to the active roster in Jackson’s absence. Jackson is off to a tremendous start this season. He’s leading the NFL with 10 touchdown passes, an average of 9.1 yards per pass, and a 130.5 passer rating. Any time he can’t play will be rough for the Ravens to get through, given that their defense is struggling mightily this year. Rush has started 14 games in his NFL career, all for the Cowboys, who were 9-5 in the games he started.
